Tampa
The area of Tampa includes many cultural museums, good shopping and plenty of tourist activities. Busch Gardens theme park , Tampa Bay is about an hour's drive away. Whilst a visit to the Salvador Dali Museum, at St.Petersburg for all art lovers is a must. Departing from Tampa Bay area are many boat trips such as pirate cruises and dolphin trips. Cat lovers will love the Big Cat Sanctuary opposite the Citrus Square Mall. The Mall is excellent for designer shopping. It has a delightful food court for lunch before a visit to the Big Cat Sanctuary.
Bradenton / Sarasota
Directly over the Cortez Bridge, is Anna Maria Island, where popular beaches like Holmes Beach, Bradenton Town Beach and Coquina Beach to the south can be found. Continuing south from Coquina and over the bridge across Long Boat Pass takes you into Long Boat Key. This is largely a residential area for the rich and famous, although there are hotels that have access to private strips of the Long Boat Key Beach. There are several public beach areas placed along the key. St Armands Circle is a purpose built village of upmarket shops, mapped out in a circle. Nestled in between the shops there are many good restaurants, offering a choice of international flavours. Well worth a visit for some retail therapy! Lido Key has a beach a round the corner from St Armands, with a beautiful stretch of white quartz sand, with clear water. The municipal city of Sarasota is known as the cultural city, with the Ringling Museum of Art being one of the major attractions, along with other galleries. The ‘Downtown Cultural District‘ contains the Sarasota Opera House, numerous theatres and night clubs all within walking distance of good restaurants. Historic Palm Avenue offers excellent shopping. The shopping malls of Sarasota are location for US chain stores such as Macys, and more. Across from Sarasota the eight mile long island of Siesta Key is connected to Sarasota by two bridges. The main public beach is Siesta Key Beach. It is large and wide; in 1987 was judged ‘the worlds finest and whitest beach’, made from 99% pure quartz. The beach sand is soft, floury and cool to the touch. To the south of the key is Turtle Beach which is quieter.
Venice Venice is about 30 minutes drive from our villa. The area provides one of the finest systems of public beaches. The area of ‘Historical Venice’ is a shopping area with many interesting shops, restaurants and a theatre. Venice Beach is Ideal for a stroll, due to it size and location, good for watching sunsets.Nokomis beach is worth a visit, situated on Casey Key. It has a beautiful, steeply shelved pale coarse sandy beach with a boat ramp available. Both Laurel and Osprey are older residential areas of the city. Osprey is the home if the historic attraction area Spanish Point, where local history landmarks can be found.
Lee Island Coast / Fort Myers
It is located on the banks of the Caloosahatchee intercoastal waterway. Called the 'City of Palms', it is rich in old south ambience and history. The city offers plenty of shopping, night spots and restaurants. For shopping, try the Eddison Mall for chain stores, or the Miramar Outlet Mall for bargains. There are many visitor attractions including, the famous winter retreats of Thomas Edison and Henry Ford, their stately homes are among the most popular. Fort Myers Beach is located on Estero Island, at the north end it is a casual beach village, to the south it has a wide selection of beach front resort hotels. Water sports are available on the beach, as is boating and fishing. Located on the northern shore of the Caloosahatchee interercoastal waterway, North Fort Myers is a blend of old town and country. ‘Manatee watch’ trips along the river are available aboard a tropical river tour. Cape Coral is surrounded by water, and has more canals than Venice, Italy. There are top rated golf championship courses here, and to cool off, the Sun Splash Water Park is a good family day out. Venture across a road bridge from Cape Coral to the barrier Island of Pine Island for fishing, bird watching, and watersorts. Bonita Springs, south of Fort Myers, is a return to Florida as it once was, with some of the most beautiful beaches in the area. Bonita Beach can be reached the scenic way from Fort Myers Beach, or from Bonita Springs. The unspoilt Lover’s Key State Recreation Area beach offers a chance to escape. The main barrier islands are Sanibel and Captiva, accessible over a bridge from Fort Myers. Sanibel is renowned for its shelling, with unusual shells quite common here. There are engaging shops, fine restaurants,galleries and boutiques here, all in a tropical setting. Visit the Bailey-Matthews shell museum here. These islands are small and quaint, with loads of character.
Naples / Marco Island Nearer to Miami than Tampa, Marco island is the largest of Florida’s 10,000 Islands. It’s the gateway to the Everglades, with a continuous beach surrounding it. Over 70 restaurants feature dockside food; while relaxing under a palm is easy with an endless supply of warm gulf breezes.
